Mind Tools & Inspirations: Spice
Spices influence the taste of food. Their effect can be subtle or intense, cooling or heating, bitter or sweet. In this 3-minute practice you call to mind a spice or flavor you enjoy and explore your experience of it.
TRY THIS…
If you have time, let me guide you so you can focus on your experience.
HERE IS THE PRACTICE
Sit comfortably and close your eyes.
Notice how you feel.
Have your hands in your lap, palms facing up.
As you inhale gently open your hands.
As you exhale close your hands.
Continue gently opening your hands as you inhale and closing your hands as you exhale, at your own pace.
Sit comfortably.
Invite a spice or flavor you enjoy to come to mind.
There is no hurry. Just wait and allow a spice or flavor you enjoy to show up.
Remember the taste.
Remember how it feels in your mouth.
Remember the smell.
As you inhale open your hands.
As you exhale close your hands.
As you continue to move and breathe this way, have a sense that you are breathing in the experience of your spice.
Again sit comfortably.
Notice how you feel when you connect with your spice.
Stay with the feeling for as long as you like.
WHY DO THIS?
Spices are ingredients added to enhance, not meant to stand alone. In this practice you focus on your experience of a spice you like. You amplify your awareness of its qualities.
Do the qualities of your spice match your personality, giving you more of what you already have? Or do the qualities contrast with your personality, offering balance?
A small quantity of spice can change the experience of food. Are there metaphoric spices that you do or could do to enhance life experiences?
Mind Tools & Inspirations are experiences for busy, smart, curious people to help you operate your human system.

I can enjoy my a chai latte mentally now. They are calorie-rich, so mentally is better;)
We picked up some chili pepper infused honey the other day and it's been a flavorful way to start the morning with some oatmeal. In recent years I've really been enjoying spicier spices, something I didn't like before. Interesting how our tastes change over time.
